Daniel Project Jacob Andrews 9781475248944 Books

This book presents a very compelling story, and there's a lot reasons why I say that but if I had to pick just one it's that from the first page it feels real. It's raw in the sense that the main character, Jacob, is guaranteed to remind you of experiences you might have gone through in your own life. His is a story that anyone can sympathize with. The ups and downs of life, the thrill of being in love, self doubt, making it day to day while having high hopes about the future. This is a pretty quick read, and easy to tackle in a day or two. But you might want to take it slow because there's a lot here. Add to that an enigmatic character, the titular Daniel, whose presence and motivations will keep you wondering. He brings just the right amount of mystery! You'll love the way it all ties together in the end. Wonderful.

Daniel Project Jacob Andrews 9781475248944 Books Reviews

And I don't say that simply because it was written by a friend. This is a great debut novel, unexpected plot from one page to another; it's a book filled with great wisdom. Please support this author and read it- you won't be sorry!
Jacob is a 19-year-old architecture student at Carnegie Mellon waiting for a train at Grand Central Station in 1976. He's a trust fund baby who loves his field of study. His life is pretty uncomplicated until he meets Daniel, in his mid-thirties, at the station. They converse and when asked about what he does, Daniel answers, "Some people have a lot of trash in their lives." He helps them deal with it. His mysterious means of support consists of "money tucked away."
One year later Jacob meets Daniel again, sitting on a bench waiting for a woman named Isabelle. She is a former dancer who had to quit because of an accident and now feels rudderless. When the man in tweed introduces himself, she treats him with disdain and walks away. Daniel, nonplussed, tells the puzzled Jacob to meet him one week hence, same place, same time.
We learn he has studied history and anthropology, focusing on big questions like the purpose of our existence. Jacob later finds himself intervening between Isabelle and her abusive partner, Kevin, who knocks both of them down. Police are called, but Kevin intimidates both and they lie and say they were drunk.
Daniel watches all this without a word. He subsequently meets regularly with Jacob, discussing religion, politics, philosophy, books, and restaurants. Jacob soaks up everything. Daniel demonstrates how he helps people by donating a large sum to an orphanage and assisting a family with a sick child. But one message he conveys to his pupil is how others have to reach rock bottom before they can pick themselves up. Enabling someone keeps them in an unhealthy cycle.
The narrative continues in that vein, with Jacob being led to others in pain. At times Jacob is frustrated with Daniel, accusing him of playing God, helping some, ignoring others, manipulating his pupil. Daniel never gets flustered, lives in an upscale building in an apartment filled with expensive antiques and fireplace. He is elusive when questioned about his history. Jacob becomes almost obsessed with this strange man, hungry for any bit of information about him.
There is a buildup to a final conflict involving all the characters except Daniel. The resolution casts each of them in a better place and Jacob develops wisdom about himself. The author ends by jumping ahead two years, then ten years, and finally thirty years.
The book is part allegory, part fable, part moral tale. It is fast moving, tidy and doesn't try to be more than it should be. The writing is not elegant, focusing more on narrative and juxtaposition of characters. Jacob's frustration with Daniel's methods reflects the reader's feelings. A criticism is the amount of time in between conflicts where scenes can bog down. The episodes between Daniel and Jacob are far more intriguing than those between the young man and the other characters.
DANIEL'S PROJECT is an odd sort of novel that some readers might find easily predictable and others will let themselves be carried along, unraveling Daniel's mysterious project.

Truly a great story, reminded me of "booth at the end". Highly recommend this book. I downloaded it around 1 and finished it around 4, great afternoon read. Hope this author keeps writing, the Daniel character has many more stories in him ;)
I love it when an author has enough creativity to put an original touch on themes that are relatable and real, and that is exactly what this author has done in his book. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good read and a great story. The characters are likable and interesting, the story is intriguing, and the writing catches your attention from start to finish. I really enjoyed it!
This is a wonderful tale from a new author. It's a story rife with diverse and well fleshed out characters, all connected by its young narrator, Jacob, and his relationship with the mysterious and enigmatic Daniel. The prose is smooth and reminiscent of Coelho in its moments of wisdom along the way, coupled with Jacob's discoveries about himself and the myriad of Pittsburgh residents he meets over a very remarkable year of his life. "A broken heart is just as blind as the love that guided it there," Jacob meditates at one point, and indeed this novel explores his own trials of love, resentment, feelings of helplessness, and much more as he becomes deeper and deeper entwined in "Daniel's project." Discoveries of hope and purpose, even in the darkest of times, and a life-affirming message make this a poignantly human novel. It comes highly recommended.
This book presents a very compelling story, and there's a lot reasons why I say that but if I had to pick just one it's that from the first page it feels real.
